Saltaire Brewery’s Dark Side!

In the coldest and darkest month of January, CAMRA have launched an initiative to cheer up drinkers by promoting stout and porter beer styles. The chaps at CAMRA have recognized that there is something special about a glass of dark beer on a cold winter’s night. As two of our favourite types of beer, Saltaire Brewery have responded by brewing two deep, rich, smooth, dark beers with unique character and flavour.

Our Chocolate Stout has become such a favourite we have been called upon to brew it all year round!  Indeed, in February it is a category finalist in the Yorkshire Area CAMRA beer competition being held at Rotherham.  The addition of oat malt and pale chocolate malt make for a smooth creamy beer, lightly hopped with Fuggles and Willamette hops from the U.S.  As a food match, we serve this beer with a chocolate mousse or just pour it over vanilla ice cream!!

As a ‘special’ to liven up that jaded Christmas palette, we have released Hazelnut and Coffee Porter.  This is a fantastic, flavoursome beer, made with dark Munich malt crystal malts.  Brazilian coffee and syrup of roasted hazelnuts are added, to make an intense and rather different porter.  If Starbucks sold beer – this would be it!

To finish off a great month for our darker beers, Chocolate Stout and our Winter Ale are available at the CAMRA Winter Ale Festival at the New Century Hall, Manchester from the 16th - 19th January 2008.  We have been brewing Winter Ale since November and it has been our best seller across the period.   Our Winter Ale is dominated by crystal and amber malts, with a crisp bitterness provided by Fuggles and Challenger hops.

Enjoy a dark beer or two while you can – Spring will soon be on the way and the brewers fancy will turn to pale, lighter, fruity ales!
