Saltaire Brewery Triumph (again!) at the Brewing Awards!
At the Society of Independent Brewers (North) annual awards ceremony, on Friday 9th January, a panel of experts awarded Saltaire’s Hazelnut Coffee Porter its Gold award in the Speciality Beer Section. Furthermore, Saltaire’s Challenger Special won a Bronze award in the hotly contested Strong ales section. These awards come hot on the heels of Saltaire Brewery’s previous success with its Cascade Pale Ale which won Gold at the same event in 2007.
Over 100 breweries from all over the North of England competed for the honours which are among the most prestigious awarded to brewers. Saltaire Brewery has been crafting real ales for just three years and has won half a dozen top awards. Hazelnut Coffee Porter is popular amongst drinkers and judges alike; it won a Silver medal at the Craven Beer festival to find ‘Yorkshires Perfect Pint’, as shown on ITV1, beating many of the big names in Yorkshire brewing.
Head Brewer, Tony Gartland said ‘We are proud to have achieved so much in so short a space of time. This award recognises the quality of our beer and the unique flavours we manage to incorporate into our brews. Hazelnut Coffee Porter is a creamy dark beer, with added fresh coffee and roast hazelnut syrup producing a unique blend of deep roast flavours. This beer has become so popular on draft, we have now added this beer to our bottled range.’
In 2008 Saltaire Brewery produced over 10,000 casks of real ale, most sold to real ale pubs in the West Yorkshire area. Managing director Paul Simpson said: ‘The mainstream pub businesses and big brewers are struggling, but committed real ale pubs and the small micro brewers, like Saltaire Brewery, continue to thrive. People are appreciating the superior tasting beers produced by small craft brewers and by Saltaire Brewery in particular! We are looking forward to 2009 and are committed to producing a range of beers brewed in the traditional style, but appealing to contemporary tastes.’
